The Father of Lies

“You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father.
He was a murderer from the beginning,
and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him.
Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature,
for he is a liar and the father of lies.
(John 8:44)

Have you ever wondered why evangelism is so difficult?  Have you ever thought that the devil had his claws in people, and it is a true fight for them to give up the old life and come to know the Lord.  Well, today’s text tells us why.
If you look at John 8, every person has a spiritual father.  Either the devil is his father, or the Lord God becomes his adopted Father.  One way or another, everyone has a father.
John 1:12 and Romans 8:17 talk, about us being children of God.  There was, so to speak, an adoption process.  In any adoption proceeding, there must be a suit filed against the birth parents stating that they are unfit to parent the child.  That is precisely what the Lord did.  He went to the cross to pay the adoption fee because the devil is not a suitable parent.
Now, imagine with me for a moment, that you wanted to adopt my son from me.  You take me to court and say that I am unfit as a parent.  If you did this, you now have the fight of your life on your hands.  I will do everything in my power to retain my son.
That is exactly what the devil does.  In our lost state, we are his children, and he is not giving us up without a fight.  He does not want to loose control of people who are already in his family.  When we present to people the truth of the cross, and the freedom they can have in Christ, the enemy wants to do everything possible to shut us up and plug their ears.  He does not want them to hear the truth about the Loving Father who wants to adopt them.
If you want people to come to know Jesus, expect an epic battle.  You are venturing into the battle ground between to fathers, and they both want the lives of every single person.  One, and only One, has the power to overcome.
Now, just like when older children are in a custody case, the child gets to choose which parent he or she wants to be with.  But here is the truth of the matter, there is no joint custody.  When you choose one, you choose them for life.  No back and forth.  You choose the devil for eternity, or the Lord God for eternity; but you must choose.  If you don’t, you will get the default choice that is stated in John 3:18, “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
My prayer …
Lord, I come to You right now knowing that there is a battle of the ages going on around me.  There are people who have been purchased by the blood of Christ, but they are still in custody of the devil. I pray You would give me the boldness, and the right words, to tell them of Amazing Grace.  I want them to hear about the Father who can set them free.  I want people around me to know Jesus the way I have been able to know Jesus…as Your child.  I love you Daddy.  Amen.
